The Woodson Barrow Luncheon

Support from David Lammy MP

Last year, I was very proud to be asked to speak at the inaugural Woodson Barrow Luncheon. I am really sorry I cannot be with you at this year’s event. For me taking part was as an inspiration - as I hope it was for all the young people involved. Too often we hear the call go out to support our young people and then nothing happens – but with Ken Barnes this call was heard and he decided to take action by starting the Woodson Barrow Luncheon.

Positivity, role models and mentoring are a vital part of how we can all be involved in ensuring that the next generation gets not only the best possible start in life; but also that we are there to support them as they make choices and plan for their own futures.

The Luncheon has rightly expanded the net of possible careers, by bringing together role models from the world of politics, business, sport and voluntary organisations - alongside motivational speakers to stimulate our young people about what they can achieve.

In 2007, I spoke about the importance of mentors, exploring the impact of friends and colleagues in helping people to achieve, and touching on those who had helped me. I stressed the importance of striving to be defined by our actions, rather than how others might perceive us. I continue to believe that we can succeed for ourselves and the wider community if we focus on the outcomes we want to see.

I was pleased to launch this year’s programme in the House of Commons and wish 2008’s Luncheon every success. I look forward to working with Ken Barnes and all the team involved over the coming year.
